Amarillo Vehicle Accident Report: July 2019

Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash

On Sunday, July 14, 26-year-old Merrick Shawn Sherel II lost control of his 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle heading westbound on Plains. According to MyHighPlains.com, after losing control, he struck the curb and was thrown from his bike. The Amarillo Police Department responded to the accident at 2:19 in the morning at the 3100 block of Plains. 

Sherel was not wearing a helmet and died at a local hospital later in the evening. While the Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson ordered an autopsy, speed was determined to be a probable cause of the accident. 

The Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department is currently investigating the accident. 

Older Man Dies After Walking Into Traffic 

Officers told 66-year-old David Soto to get back on the sidewalk after the older man walked into the street, forcing several cars to hit their brakes to avoid a collision. 

According to the Amarillo Pioneer, Soto was walking northbound on Amarillo Boulevard crossing North Grand when he was struck by a Chevy truck driven by a 24-year-old male. Soto was then run over by a 27-year-old male driving a Hyundai four-door sedan. Both vehicles were traveling east. 

Soto succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. This case is currently under investigation by the ADP Traffic Investigation Squad. 

Two Trucks Collide on U.S. 287 

According to ABC 7 Amarillo, two trucks collided on July 1, blocking both lanes and spilling fuel onto the road. The trucks were headed west on U.S. 287. The Texas Department of Transportation arranged for sand to be thrown onto the spilled fuel. There were no life-threatening injuries due to this collision. 

Two-Vehicle Accident Sends One to The Hospital

ABC 7 Amarillo reported that two vehicles collided south of State Loop 335 on July 2. One person was injured in the accident and sent to the hospital for medical assistance. The accident is under investigation.

Truck Causes HazMat Incident on McCormick Road

A truck headed westbound on McCormick Road was involved in an accident, causing it to separate from its truck-tractor. According to ABC 7 Amarillo, the truck was carrying 37,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia that began to leak from a vent, making it a HazMat situation.

The Amarillo Fire Department was called to assess the situation and provide aid. No evacuations were needed. A Randall County Road & Bridge crew also responded to the scene to make emergency repairs to the road. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. 

One Dead, Two Injured in Semi-Truck Turn Over

Sukhdev Sighn, 44, was driving a semi-truck around 4:01 a.m. on July 1, NewsChannel10 reported. For an unknown reason, the truck veered off to the south of I-40, rolling into the center median. 

Sighn was pronounced dead. His passengers, who were both wearing seatbelts, were sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The accident is under investigation.
